After its population crossed 26 lakhs, it was declared the second "metropolis" of Rajasthan.It was also the capital of the historic princely state of Marwar of the same name. barmer is also a famous tourist destination with its many magnificent palaces, forts and temples in the middle of the Thar Desert.
